First Christmas Ever, Straight Out of a Movie

For most people reading this, Christmas is a normal thing. You’ve celebrated it all your life. You have so many memories tied to it. But for me, Christmas 2023 was special.

Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25 as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. This is the season they focus on the “incarnation,” which means that God became human in the form of Jesus Christ.

Welcome, There Is Room

Earlier this month I had the privilege of witnessing my husband Paul become a Canadian citizen. During the ceremony, we were shown a video called “Welcome, There Is Room”—and I was struck by the power of those words and the weight of history behind them.

When Were the Good Old Days?

In 1976 in Chowchilla, California, a bus full of children was hijacked by three men who had the intention of holding the students for ransom. A dreadful 36 hours later, the children all made it home relatively unscathed. They were hungry, thirsty, and absolutely terrified, but they were also physically unharmed.

Talking Trash

The leaders of our community recently decided it was time to talk trash… both literally and figuratively. How strange that a community that still had burn barrels 20 years ago would find the subject of recycling so complex and contentious. It’s a testament to our commitment to good stewardship, and for this we should commend our leadership.

Look on the Bright Side: Outside Is the Best Side

I humorously watched as my grandson lined up all the bicycles and outdoor riding toys, readying them for his “car wash.” The fact that he was wearing his preschool graduation hat, two backpacks, and had marker lines drawn across his face resembling war paint was of no concern to him. As he reached for the beloved garden hose, his little sister, artistically covered in blue sidewalk chalk and dragging Daddy’s shovel behind her, shuffled over in a pair of Mommy’s shoes to share in her big brother’s antics.

Hooked on a Feeling

Communication via social media can be an enjoyable way to stay in touch with family and friends. It’s satisfying to see the comments and pictures others have posted, and to share our own as well. I’m sure most would agree that we love the feeling we get when our comments or pictures are rewarded with the coveted like.

Look on the Bright Side: Give Yourself Room to Breathe

Spring is upon us, and for most our annual spring cleaning is underway. We once again open windows, closet doors, dresser drawers, and storage bins, using the fresh air as motivation to take stock of all the stuff that has accumulated over the past year. We attempt to rid ourselves of the unwanted and unnecessary clutter by sifting through and sorting these into organized piles of what to keep, what to toss, and what to give away.

Change Is the Cure

Our health system is on life support, and the prognosis is unknown. Much like with patients themselves, it’s not always clear what the problem is. But there is a problem. We are not well, so we ask doctors, nurses, and other professionals to help. Sometimes the answer is straightforward, with a prescription issued and the malady kept at bay. Other times, experimentation and tests are required to determine the cause of our sickness.

Look on the Bright Side: The Spice of Diversity

I agree with William Cowper’s famous expression, “Variety is the spice of life that gives it all its flavour”—except that is, where food is concerned. I have never been one to seek out new or unique food experiences. While my kids and grandkids all seem to have adventurous tastebuds, I have always been quite comfortable with my limited palate.
