The Niverville Nighthawks are now just two wins away from the Turnbull Cup after a 3–1 victory over the Virden Oil Capitals in Game 2 on Sunday night in Virden.
Backstopped by another stellar performance from goaltender Austin Dubinsky, the Nighthawks improved to 10–1 in the postseason and carry a 2–0 series lead in the McMunn & Yates Turnbull Cup Final heading back to home ice.
Just like in Game 1, Niverville wasted no time getting on the board. Calyb Moore opened the scoring early in the first period, capitalizing on a loose puck in the slot and snapping it past Braxton Burdeny for his third of the playoffs. I’s the third consecutive game in which the Nighthawks have scored in the first three minutes.
Despite being outshot 14–8 in the opening frame, the Nighthawks carried a 1–0 lead into the intermission thanks to Dubinsky, who turned aside every chance Virden generated.
Merik Boles made an immediate impact in his return to the lineup after missing Game 1 due to illness. He struck less than two minutes into the second period, finishing off a strong forechecking sequence to double Niverville’s lead. Adam Vigfusson chased the puck down in the corner and forced a turnover behind the net. Hayden Wheddon gathered the loose puck, then found Boles who found the back of the net.
The Oil Capitals pushed back with several quality chances, including a breakaway opportunity for Bryce Bryant, but Dubinsky remained unbeatable.
Late in the second, Dawson Zeller continued his scoring surge, netting his third goal in as many games, and his sixth of the playoffs, firing a puck from the left circle through the legs of Burdeny to make it 3–0.
Virden finally broke through in the third period when Liam Goertzen capitalized on a fortunate bounce that redirected off a skate past Dubinsky to give the Oil Capitals some hope. However, it proved too late.
The Nighthawks’ penalty kill remained flawless, shutting down all three of Virden’s powerplay opportunities. Niverville has now gone a perfect 21 for 21 on the penalty kill since Game 3 of their first-round series against Winkler.
Dubinsky finished the night with 28 saves, continuing what has been an exceptional playoff run. The 20-year-old netminder hasn’t allowed more than two goals in any postseason game and has held opponents to one goal or fewer in seven of his 11 appearances.
The Nighthawks will look to tighten their grip on the series when it shifts back to Niverville for Game 3 at the CRRC on Tuesday night. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
