The Niverville Nighthawks looked like a good hockey team again as they dismantled the Portage Terriers by a 6–3 count on Wednesday night in the team’s final home game of the regular season. With just two games left before the playoffs, the Nighthawks boast a 33–20–3 record.
After giving up the first goal just a minute into the contest, the Nighthawks stormed back to score two goals in quick succession to take the lead.
The Nighthawks exploded with offence in the second period, scoring four times, while Portage only found the back of the net once. Portage scored once more in the third period, but that’s as close as they came.
Adam Vigfusson and Hayden Wheddon led the charge for the Nighthawks with two goals apiece, while Merik Boles and Dawson Zeller had the team’s other tallies.
Niverville’s Austin Dubinsky stopped 28 shots in goal for the win.
“It was a game that we needed to get back to finding our game,” says Nighthawks head coach Dwight Hirst. “We were playing unmotivated hockey as of late, ever since we clinched our playoff spot. It was another example of what our club is capable of when we play with energy, resiliency, and pace. We obviously had taken our foot off the gas in the third period to focus on getting through the game clean.”
The Nighthawks are back in action with another contest versus the Terriers, this time on the road on March 15. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
“With only a few games until playoffs, I want to see control, discipline, and consistency in our small details that fuel our own game,” says Hirst.
