On January 23, news broke of sexual misconduct charges being laid against a former teacher in the Hanover School Division—specifically, Braeden Martens, who taught at the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS). According to the Steinbach RCMP, Martens faces charges of luring a child under the age of 16 and an invitation to sexual touching. These incidents allegedly took place between September 2023 and January 2025.

As of February 4, the contract to construct an intermunicipal wastewater treatment plant has been awarded to Aecon Group Inc. The proposed site of the plant lies in Ritchot, just north of Niverville.

Niverville council met for their morning public meeting on February 3 to address a number of bylaw-related concerns.

It’s been six weeks since The Citizen published the news that a major AI data centre is being proposed for Île-des-Chênes (IDC).

According to Ritchot fire chief Scott Weir, emergency call in 2025 were pretty consistent with prior years. In total, 144 calls were received last year as compared to 147 in 2024.

When it comes to crime stats in Niverville and Ritchot, according to Corporal Melanie Roussel, RCMP media relations officer, 2025 maintained the status quo from the previous year. There doesn’t seem to be a direct correlation between crime rates and population growth.
