On July 1, Ren de Moissac of Ste. Agathe took on the CEO reins of BSI Insurance Brokers. De Moissac, who has been with the company for more than 11 years, says he has served in many capacities, including in customer service, IT, Human Resources, accounting, and marketing.

It was a very forgettable evening at the CRRC on Wednesday evening as the Niverville Nighthawks fell 6–2 to the Winnipeg Freeze. With the loss, the Nighthawks stay in fourth place in the MJHL’s East Division with a record of 15–11–1.

Nearly 15 years since its inception, the Niverville Business Park is seeing some significant development. On July 13, Niverville’s council, representatives of Edie Construction Ltd. (ECL), and invited guests met at the entrance to the new business park on Sixth Avenue North for the official ground-breaking ceremony.

This August, Rainbow Trout Music Festival will be hosting its ninth annual festival on the banks of the Roseau River, just south of St. Malo, Manitoba. All ages can enjoy this event by purchasing a weekend camping pass, or just go for the day, from August 18–20. 

In the RM of Ritchot’s July 19 by-election, Chris Ewen snuck past incumbent Jackie Hunt to be elected mayor. According to preliminary results, Ewen received 742 votes to Hunt’s 650. Other challengers included Gene Whitney (413 votes) and Marianne Curtis (106 votes).

The Niverville Middle School’s Grade Eight boys basketball recently wrapped up an exceptionally successful season. Earlier this month, the team won their division championship, defeating Steinbach Middle School (Black) in the final.

In today’s world, having a good grasp on geography is becoming increasingly important. Douglas Richardson, executive director of the Association of American Geographers, says that geographic knowledge is essential for survival in our rapidly globalizing world. The Royal Canadian Geographical Society recognizes that too and sets out to provide an educational basis by which young Canadians can build on their knowledge.

Niverville’s town council has a plan to deal with the shortfall of water from its Spruce Drive water treatment plant. As previously reported, a new wellfield has been identified in the RM of Hanover, to the east of Highway 59, and a pipeline will have to be constructed to connect that well to Niverville’s water system.

Years of anxiety about Niverville’s school overcrowding problems are finally being put to rest. Although the province made it clear a month ago that Niverville was a high priority for a new high school, the official announcement came on June 16 when the Honourable Ian Wishart, Manitoba’s Education and Training Minister, issued a request for proposals from architectural firms, with architects to be interviewed by the end of June.
