On April 17, the RM of Ritchot’s council held a public meeting. Three variation requests were heard, each asking for variances on new build distances from property boundaries. Council approved each one by acclamation. The properties were located in St. Adolphe, Grande Pointe, and along Leblanc Road.
Council also gave first reading to a proposed amendment for a Grande Pointe secondary plan on a rural residential compact housing area which will provide affordable housing options in the region. CAO Mitch Duval described a secondary plan as similar to a development plan, something that provides a developer with vision for a development.
According to RM bylaws, 6.5 units per acre are allowed in such a zoning and that a private road access would be required so that the RM will not be required to provide maintenance. Privately owned greenspace and active transportation routes would also need to be established by the developer.
First reading for the amendment passed in council. A public hearing will take place on May 22.
Council also discussed a provincial funding initiative called the Building Sustainable Communities Fund. Council received a list of local organizations interested in applying for this funding for a variety of Ritchot projects. Council voted to support these applications.
Finally, council was given a preview of savings received by switching cell phone packages for administration and staff. In the first quarter, the RM saw a savings of $3,400, although Duval indicates that the savings will taper down to a smaller number for the balance of the year since some credits were applied going in. Further cost savings may be available down the road as council analyzes the administrative landline and fleet radios used by the fire department.
